North Korea: The Democratic People's Republic

A Country Divided

North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), lies in East Asia, occupying the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. It shares borders with China and the Russian Federation. The term "North Korea" reflects the country's division from South Korea following World War II and the failure of reunification negotiations.

Established in 1948 under the leadership of Kim Il Sung, North Korea has evolved into a single-party dictatorship under the Workers' Party of Korea. Despite claiming to be a democratic republic, the country's political system is characterized by authoritarian rule and a rigid ideology known as "Juche."

Foundation and Consolidation of Power

After World War II, Korea was temporarily divided along the 38th parallel. Negotiations for a unified country failed, and on September 9, 1948, North Korea declared its independence as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Kim Il Sung, who led the country for nearly five decades, consolidated his power through political purges and a strong military presence. He established a personality cult around himself and his family, which has continued to shape North Korea's political culture.
