Mercedes Driver Stripped Of Victory After Post Race Technical Inspection

George Russell loses Belgian GP win due to underweight car

Mercedes driver stripped of victory after post-race technical inspection

Russell's initial win was a remarkable achievement, but it was ultimately short-lived

George Russell's remarkable victory at the Belgian Grand Prix was cruelly snatched away from him after his Mercedes car was found to be underweight following a post-race technical inspection.

The FIA Formula One technical delegate, Jo Bauer, said in his report following the race that when Russell's car was initially weighed, it was found to be 0.4kg under the minimum weight limit of 798kg.

As a result, Russell was disqualified from the race, and the victory was awarded to his Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton.

Russell was understandably devastated by the decision, saying that he felt "gutted" to have lost the win in such a way.

"I'm so proud of the team for all the hard work they put in, and I'm so disappointed that we couldn't bring home the win," he said.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said that the team was "disappointed" with the decision, but that they respected the FIA's ruling.

"We will learn from this and come back stronger," he said.
